195 - Should You Grow Beyond Yourself?
In this video, I'll be sharing my thoughts on whether or not you should grow your photography business beyond yourself. It's important to note that this decision is a personal one, and just because entrepreneurship is popular nowadays, it doesn't necessarily mean that building a multi-person operation is the right choice for everyone. You can make a great living as a solo photographer, as long as you consistently deliver a great customer experience. In fact, I made over $10,000 a month within six months of starting my photography business by myself, which goes to show that making a good living is definitely possible as a solo photographer.
However, I personally chose to grow my business beyond myself because I was more passionate about business building than photography. I was willing to make the sacrifices required to build a larger business, even though it took way more effort and didn't necessarily result in more income. Hiring additional people means there are more expenses and changing business dynamics to manage, which can make the process more complicated.
If you do decide to grow beyond yourself, be prepared for the hard work and dedication it requires. In my case, I took no weekends or holidays off and didn't have much of a personal life for a year because I was committed to delivering a great customer experience. On the other hand, if you decide to stay as a solo photographer and start getting really busy, you can always increase your prices to make more money while working fewer hours. Raising your prices is sometimes a better solution than hiring more people.
I believe the main obstacle to business growth in the creative space is the lack of scalability in business processes. This is what I was initially concerned about when I was working by myself - how was I going to train others to do what I'm doing? It's important to spend time training and hiring the right people, especially at the beginning. I was lucky to have found a great first hire who was a hard worker and shared my vision for the business.
Overall, whether or not you should grow your photography business beyond yourself is a personal decision, and there's no right or wrong answer. It's important to reflect on what success looks like for you and make a decision based on your goals and priorities. For me, the process of building a business was enjoyable despite the challenges, and I love problem-solving, so growing beyond myself was the right choice.
