139 - The Settings | Luxury Photography

Hey everyone, in this video, we're going to talk about the camera settings we use for luxury photography here at Lister Pros. We believe in keeping things simple for our media specialists, and our default settings allow for only four variables to be managed at the property: composition, aperture, ISO, and flash settings. Our camera of choice for luxury photography is the Sony A7 III with a Zeiss 16-35mm lens, but these settings should work for most DSLR and mirrorless cameras.
Our default aperture is set to f/7.1, which we adjust between f/4 and f/13 depending on the shot. We prefer to keep the aperture low, but we test our lenses to make sure they perform well at lower apertures. Our ISO settings are set to 100 by default and can be increased up to 320 for luxury photography. We avoid going beyond this point as it can result in more noise or grain in the shadows during the editing process.
We usually leave our white balance set to auto, which can be easily adjusted during the editing process. But for some homes, a specific white balance setting may need to be selected depending on the lighting conditions and time of day. For most Twilight shoots, we use the incandescent setting.
Our focus mode is set to automatic and the focus area is set to wide, which works for most shooting scenarios. We set our drive mode to single shot or the two-second self-timer mode to avoid camera shake. We set our file format to compressed raw, as we have found that there isn't much difference between compressed and uncompressed raw in terms of image quality. We also make sure that the lens distortion compensation is set to auto.
During the shoot, we manage our external flash output settings and watch out for job shadows to get a good grasp on managing our flash from shot to shot. For exteriors, our flashes are typically set to a quarter or half power, while for interiors, the flash power setting depends on the size of the room and can be anywhere between 1/64 and full power.
These settings have worked well for us, and they are a good starting point for luxury photography. However, the most important thing is to deliver a consistent product and a great experience to your customers.
