202 - Providing Company Vehicles

In this video, I want to share my experience with providing company vehicles. When I first started my business, I was initially hesitant to provide work vehicles to my team members. It just seemed like a lot of extra work and management, and I thought reimbursing them for gas or mileage would be an easier route to go. However, I ended up choosing to provide company vehicles because of the branding aspect and the fact that we could use fuel-efficient vehicles to cover a large area without charging our customers travel fees.
As a car guy, I enjoyed doing the oil changes and maintenance on our initial four or five vehicles myself. But as our fleet grew to close to 20 vehicles, it became a full-time job that I didn't want to take on. We also hold our team members accountable for keeping their vehicles clean and following our guidelines. Although providing company vehicles does come with additional expenses like commercial insurance, gas, and tires, we feel it's a benefit to our team members as they don't have to put all that wear and tear on their personal vehicles.
When we hire new media specialists, we make sure to do a driving record check before offering the position. After the 90-day probationary period, we then issue the company vehicle. It's important not to rush into giving team members a vehicle right away and to hold them accountable for maintaining and following the guidelines. We've had to let team members go in the past for not following our vehicle guidelines, and we've even installed 360 Dash cams in all of our vehicles to help reduce distracted driving incidents.
In summary, I think providing company vehicles can be a great benefit to team members, but it's important to be aware of the additional work and expenses that come along with it. In most cases, reimbursing for gas and mileage is probably the easier route to go. But if you're willing to manage the fleet and hold team members accountable for maintaining and following guidelines, providing company vehicles can be a viable option.
